Shibuya crossing

Today’s photo is from a pretty known place in Tokyo, the Shibuya crossing.

Shibuya crossing, 2 seconds long exposure.

Situated next to the JR station, at the Hachiko exit (beware: sad dog story inside), the Shibuya crossing has been pictured in a lot of books and movies, such as Lost in Translation. It is one of the most crowdy crosswalk in the world, with the particularity of leaving the pedestrians to cross the streets in all the directions at once. When you’re in the middle of the crowd, with the incredible noise from all the screens, it’s a pretty weird experience.

This shot was done with my Samyang 14mm lens, which gives a bit of distortion, but also allows me to have a large part of the buildings over there. It is a long exposure (well, longish: 1,6 seconds), in order to capture the pedestrian flow, but without making them too blurry. Of course, a tripod was needed, luckily for me the Japanese are polite people and none kicked my tripod :)

I regret I couldn’t capture it from above, unfortunately the good spot I found didn’t allow tripods, so I took it from below.

The processing is pretty standard, in Adobe Lightroom. The main work was on reducing the distortion and taming a bit the highlights, due to the incredible amount of light over there.
